"I like to create relationships between things that don't have a pre-existing one," Tankian said. "I was thinking of a banana, and then I just made up this phrase. It's like, 'Okay, so this is a banana. Where is the terracotta? What does that have to do with the price of beans?'"
Tankian's approach to songwriting is to keep the audience engaged and entertained. He believes that political messages can be more impactful when delivered with a touch of humor. By incorporating ridiculous lyrics like "Banana Terracotta Pie," he makes the music more palatable and accessible to a wider audience.
"If you just preach, no one's gonna listen," he said. "But if you're laughing, if you're doing something that's funny, it makes the serious message more relatable. It's like the 'Prison Song' example. The humor creates a light mood, and then the serious lyrics hit you like a ton of bricks."
The band's producer, Rick Rubin, initially struggled to understand the lyric, but as the song progressed through rehearsals and recordings, he grew to love it. Tankian's explanation of the lyric's origin and its impact on the song's overall mood highlights his creative process and the band's unique approach to music.
"It's one of those songs that just kind of hassle you into loving it," Tankian said. "It's like a puzzle that you have to solve, and once you do, it becomes one of your favorites."
